A BIG Opportunity Almost Got Away

Brief Overview

A BIG opportunity has just landed in my lap, but it almost got away from me. I’ll tell you about the opportunity and what I did to bring it all back in this episode.

Story

A couple months ago, I got an email from my friend, Ryan Lee. For those that don’t know Ryan (like me) is known for his expertise with recurring revenue and membership sites. Well, being known for something specific (see episode #10) got us into a discussion with the one and only, Tony Robbins. Basically, Tony wanted us to fly down to his house in West Palm Beach and spend a day just geeking out on all things membership sites. We were going back and forth in email, trying to coordinate a date and time. Unfortunately, the date suggested just didn’t work for me. I was just coming off a huge promotion and I was in the fulfillment stage of that process. My schedule was slammed and I had a commitment that I couldn’t back out on. I suggested an alternative date, but it just didn’t seem to work. The date came and went. The communication just went quiet.

I remember my wife asked me “Hey, have you followed up with that Tony Robbins thing?” The answer was no. While I figured the opportunity would come back up in good time, I didn’t want to look desperate. That’s was my internal limiting belief. I didn’t want to seem desperate!? Anyways, a couple months passed and my wife says “You know what? Just shoot them an email and just ask.

I decided to take her advice. I broke the silence, if you will. I shot his contact a quick email and said, “Hey a couple of months from now Tony and I are actually going to be speaking at the same event, it might be worth getting together to say hi and discuss initially what he’s looking to do. Then we can set a date and a time for the full day afterwards.” I immediately got a response to coordinate a time with Tony’s executive assistant. I was also informed that Tony’s coming out with a new book in the coming months and he wants to discuss that as well. My guess is he probably wants Ryan and I to promote it, which I’d be excited to help him in that regard. The cool part is, I got the communication going again.

Big Ideas

[05:50] how many opportunities do you and I have available to us which we just let go and we just let fall off because we don’t follow-up? Far too often, we let our ego or self-limiting beliefs get in the way. Thanks to my wife, who pushed me to follow up, I’m likely going to get together with Tony Robbins to geek out on membership sites. It just proved to me that at the end of the day, it’s important to follow-up.

[07:15] I know from a marketing standpoint we always try to look at all the big, fancy whiz bang strategies, but at the end of the day a simple follow-up could probably generate you more clients, generate you more opportunity to serve those clients, and therefore generate you a lot more money.

[07:30] The key to following up, is to have a reason for the follow-up. In my case with Tony, I had a reason. I just found out that we’re both going to be speaking at the same event. Perfect, that’s an opportunity to reach out and create some contact again. Opportunities are all around you to follow-up with all these different people but you’ve just got to put it into practice. It was a big lesson learned. Bottom line, there’s a huge opportunity for you and I to follow-up with all of our existing clients, JV partners, prospects, past customers, you name it, there’s an opportunity there.
